8 movie sequels that have disastrously flopped at the box office this year

It hasn't been a good year at the box office for sequels.

Hopeful hits like "Dark Phoenix" and "Men in Black: International" flopped hard over the summer of lousy sequels. Even well-reviewed movies like "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part," which opened early this year, couldn't attract the kind of audience the first movie did five years ago.

The summer box office reflected a troubling trend of 2019. It was down 2% domestically compared to last summer, and the year's domestic box office has almost single handedly been supported by Disney movies, save for a few exceptions.

Even "It: Chapter Two," which opened over the weekend, didn't live up to the expectations set by its predecessor ( though it's still a success). It earned $91 million in its opening weekend in the US, while the first "It" in 2017 made a record $123 million in its debut.

We rounded up eight 2019 sequels that have disappointed at the box office, and compared their domestic and worldwide box offices, based on numbers from Box Office Mojo (domestic totals for the predecessors are adjusted for inflation):
